KOLKATA: Goodricke, a group company of the Camellia PLC, U.K., the second largest global tea producer, today announced the introduction of its Rainforest Alliance certified teas. These teas, the most premium in the Goodricke range, are exclusively sourced from Rainforest Alliance Certified tea estates spread across Darjeeling & Assam like Castleton, Margaret's Hope, Barnesbeg, Badamtam and Thurbo, to name a few.
These top quality fresh teas will carry the Rainforest Alliance Certified seal on their packaging as a mark of one of the highest sustainable standards possible. This seal, incorporating a little green frog within the trademark, is recognised around the world for assuring customers that the product they are buying has been sourced from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms. The farm certification system is built on improving environmental protection, social equity and economic viability, the three 'pillars' of sustainability.
Goodricke Group, a major producer and exporter of tea has 15 tea estates in India (5 in Darjeeling, the rest in Assam) that are Rainforest Alliance certified. This prestigious certification is received only after farms achieve independently developed Sustainable Agriculture Network standard. Containing 100 separate criteria for sustainable farm management, this rigorous standard has till date only been passed by a small portion of estates in India. Now, tea grown to this standard will be more widely available to consumers within India for the first time.
With this, India joins the UK, Germany, USA, France, Australia, Brazil and China - amongst many others - in offering Rainforest Alliance certified products for sale. In the UK, it is estimated that over two thirds of the tea sold is sourced from Rainforest Alliance certified farms.
Per Bogstad, Manager, Sustainable Value Chains, U.K. and Ireland, Rainforest Alliance, commented: "Goodricke and other tea estate owners in their group, were early adopters of our programme in India and Africa. This brought huge benefits to the company's tea estates, their workers, farms and the wildlife surrounding them. With the launch of these world class products, and the use of the Rainforest Alliance certified seal, customers in India can now buy their tea knowing that their tea comes from a responsible business with a long term future".
Mr. Pranjal Neog, General Manager, Human Resource of Goodricke GroupBSE 0.42 % Limited said on the occasion, "We are extremely proud to be associated and certified by the prestigious Rainforest Alliance. It will be our constant endeavour to serve best quality teas to our consumers. Such accolades are validation of a team's efforts and serve as a long-term value addition to our product range".
