KOLKATA, 11 FEB: Mr Gautam Deb, state minister for North Bengal development is going to Kalimpong tomorrow where 3000 Lepcha began a fast demanding separate Lepcha Development Council.
A senior official said Mr Deb will speak to Lepcha supporters to know their demands and later inform chief minister Miss Mamata Banerjee regarding the present condition of the movement. The official said a separate organisation will be formed soon for the development of the Lepcha under society registration act. Meanwhile a four member team of the Lepcha Rights Movement today met with home secretary Mr Basudeb Banerjee for urging him a separate Lepcha Development Council. A member said Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) is politicising the development issue for the Lepcha. The member said around 20600 Lepcha are in West Bengal and they require a separate development council. sns
