KALCHINI,18 Jul 2013: The
Jaigaon unit of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha today organised a silent
rally protesting against the physical harassment on women’s wing leader
Romila Lepcha on July 12. The GJM women wing had filed a complaint
against some local Congress leaders and supporters who allegedly
attacked her that night.
The protest rally was conducted after a
week’s silence and failure to make arrests by the police administration.
The rally ended at the police station premises following which there
was a discussion with officer-in-charge Binod Gajmer.
GJM supporters led by GTA Sabhasad Aruna Sigchi and Narbuji Lama demanded to know why the police have failed in arresting Congress leaders Kamal Pakhrin and Mohan Sharma. They also demanded an immediate investigation into the case and the accused arrested.
According to the police, they are looking into the matter and have assured to solve it before the elections. The GJM members surrounded the OC until assurance of immediate action was provided by the administration. Sigchi warned the police of starting an agitation if the administration failed to take immediate action.
Around 700 GJM supporters participated in the rally covering their mouths with black handkerchiefs and scarves.

CPM accuses GJM of obstructing party campaign
Jalpaiguri,18 Jul 2013: The
Gorkha Janmukti Morcha has been accused by the CPM for obstructing its
election campaigning at Min Glass tea estate of the Dooars. GJM
supporters are interrupting the CPM’s activities under the leadership of
Tej Bahadur Tamang, the GJM labour union leader of Min Glass tea
estate, said sources.
Narmada Chhetri, the CPM candidate of
the region, has written a complaint to Malbazar block BDO Pakhi Doma
Sherpa against the GJM’s alleged disruptive activities.
However, Tamang refuted the allegations saying CPM-backed assailants had hurled stones at his house instead. A complaint has been lodged on this matter at Malbazar police station, he informed.
BDO Sherpa said the matter has been discussed with the Malbazar police station and it has started an investigation.
GJM candidate Diba Munda has been pitched against the CPM’s Narmada Chhetri in the area, with the latter alleging her party’s supporters are not being allowed inside the tea estate to campaign.
She added CPM workers were harassed while campaigning at Line No.15 of the tea estate on Wednesday, while she herself was threatened and mistreated. Local CPM leader and Zilla Parishad candidate Agastush Kerkata said workers at the tea estate have been CPM supporters since ages. He said GJM supporters have become aggressive ever since their party chief Bimal Gurung campaigned in the region recently.
Meanwhile, the Malbazar BDO pointed out ‘obstruction to campaigning’ stands against election process guidelines. She added complaints from both parties have been considered while initiating the investigation. (EOIC)
