Kurseong, 14 July : Ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha election, a new organisation is likely to be formed in Darjeeling Hills.
The present circumstances and political development in the Hills indicates that soon, a new political party or a strong apolitical organisation will be formed in the Hills under the leadership of Dr Mahendra P Lama, former Vice-Chancellor of Sikkim University and the country’s advisory committee member on National Security. The reports also revealed that such an organisation might bring in a major change in the Hills political equation.
Since the declaration of Dr Lama that he will contest the coming LS 2014 election as an independent candidate, a new environment have been created as well as new excitement have been seen among the people at different places in the Hills.
Observers said, the way in which Mr Lama has been getting huge public support, there is chance of a major change in the Hills politics soon.
Mr Lama met and interacted with the people at Mirik today, where he discussed his idea of making himself available for the MP election as an independent candidate for the overall development of Darjeeling Hills. Meanwhile, the gathering welcomed and appreciated his move and vowed to support him. Recently, on 12 July, he met and interacted with the people at Kurseong Tourist Lodge. It was learnt that he might form his team to gather support in his attempt to contest the MP election from today’s gathering, soon in Mirik.
However, Mr Lama repeatedly kept saying that he is only contesting the MP election and the basic political equation in Darjeeling Hills will be left to the present political dispensations which are not his fiefdom. He is not here to contest against any political party rather he is here to help the region by placing the issues of Darjeeling at the right place as an Independent candidate without any political affiliation.
Mr Lama also enlightened that the help of the Bengalis and other communities is needed to take Darjeeling forward even if it requires a Bengali to be a Chief Minister of a separate State in the near future. The aspiration of a separate statehood is always there within and for this achievement the people must broaden their horizon and be
visionaries.
He said that his immediate priority is development of Darjeeling in every field and bring about the complete transformation of the region from the present face to a brand new one.
