Birsa to visit Dooars to support Mamata’s anti-Gorkhaland drive

Birsa Tirkey

The mainstream ABAVP leadership seems to have found in the Mamata Banerjee government’s anti-Gorkhaland drive something of a godsend and to make optimum use of the situation, the outfit’s state president, Mr Birsa Tirkey is set to visit the Dooars next month.
“It is time to take sweet revenge against the renegade group that parted company with the parental outfit to curry favour with the GJMM. Now the turncoats being on the run with the state government zip-fastening on the statehood movement in the Hills as well as in the plains, the mainstream group would spare no effort to eliminate them from the political theater of the Dooars,” said an observer.  Mr Tirkey is scheduled to come to the Dooars on a four-day visit beginning from 7 September.
The outfit remained demoralised after the splinter group led by Mr John Barla known as the north Bengal branch of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) had put up a good rural poll show in alliance with the GJMM in the core area of the Dooars. Things plunged to such depths for them that the Dooars-based ABAVP leaders had purportedly asked Mr Tirkey to keep out of the region for the time being. But their morale has got boosted with the state government having plunged headlong into warfare to stamp out any hint of separatism.
While the GJMM and the splinter Adivasi outfit faction leaders in the Dooars have gone into hiding to evade arrests the mainstream ABAVP staged a motorcycle rally across Malbazar sub-division yesterday. More such rallies are on the cards.
Mr Tirkey admitted that the chief minister’s rough and tough posturing is standing them in good stead. “With the renegades’ morale nose-diving, we would spare no effort to retrieve our lost base among our constituency in the region. I would ask those who had switched to the JMM and got elected on the JMM tickets to the rural bodies to return to the mainstream,” he said.
