While the Centre has called activists in Assam demanding separate states for negotiations in Delhi it seems to be keeping the Hills activists who are demanding Gorkhaland at bay.
It is learnt that the tripartite meetings between the Centre, Assam government and leaders of the statehood movements in the state would be held in the first week of September.
But despite constant prodding from the GJMM and the newly-formed Gorkhaland Joint Action Committee for talks, the Centre has chosen to keep them out in the cold.
The Union home ministry is said to have asked Bodo People’s Front, Joint Action Committee for Autonomous State for Karbi Anglong and Cooch-Rajbanshi Students’ Union for Kamtapur state in New Delhi at the initiative of the Assam chief minister, Mr Tarun Gogoi.
Taking strong exception to the Centre’s strategy of dodging them, the GJMM leader and GJAC coordinator Mr Raju Pradhan said they would not approach the Centre on their own. “This is an instance of double standards,” he said, adding that the shadow of the Bengal’s chief minister is discernible in the Centre’s decision to keep them out in the cold.
Echoing the resentment, the GJAC chairperson Mr Enos Das Pradhan said it is clear that the UPA is unwilling to make Miss Mamata Banerjee angry with an eye on the electoral permutations and combinations in the post-2014 Lok Sabha poll scenario. “But such machinations would not solve things here,” he warned.
The opinion of the former urban development minister and senior CPI-M leader Mr Asok Bhattacharya is the same. “Miss Banerjee wants to keep the Darjeeling tangle alive to use the anti-Gorkhaland sentiment of the Bengalis in the next Lok Sabha elections,” he added.
The ALGL vice-president, Mr Laxman Pradhan, said: “The GJMM is in a double bind. The state government, on one hand, is bent on crushing them out and the Centre, on the other, keeps ignoring them to keep Miss Banerjere in good humour. The Centre is unlikely to invite them to talks, given its clear stance of non-interference without the state’s concurrence,” he said.
