Siliguri, 29 August : The Darjeeling police have started filing suo moto cases against the
Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM) leaders for forcing the students aged 12
or less in the party rallies staged in support of the statehood demand
in the Darjeeling Hills.
“We have already filed 25 suo moto cases. These include cases of forcing participation of the students and staging unauthorised rallies. However, no one has been arrested so far in this connection," said the Darjeeling superintendent of police, Mr Kunal Agarwal in Siliguri after attending a meeting at North Bengal Development Department (NBDD) office today.
Thousands of students from different schools have attended the rallies in different parts of the Hills after the movement for Gorkhaland was revived in the last week of July.
Mr Agarwal said further that the non-bailable charges are being slapped for staging rallies on the National Highways.
He said so far around 850 GJMM leaders and activists, including 12 Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) members, have been put behind bars in connection with several cases.
Fifteen companies of Central forces are currently deployed in the Hills to maintain law and order, he added.
The GJMM spokesperson, Mr Raju Pradhan, refused to say anything.

Poster campaign against Gurung for involving students in rally
Darjeeling, 29 August: In a rare development in the GJMM-dominated political space of the
Darjeeling Hills, some posters have been found today pasted in
Darjeeling and Kalimpong towns, attacking the GJMM chief, Mr Bimal
Gurung, for involving students in the statehood stir as baits to bolster
his and his party’s image while having his own wards safely tucked
abroad away from the Gorkhaland heat and bluster.
This is reminiscent of what the slain AIGL president, Madan Tamang used to say while speaking against the self-centeredness of the GJMM-sponsored statehood stir. The posters further said the party seems more worried about the senior leader, Mr Binay Tamang having been thrown behind the bars than with the cause or Gorkhaland itself. The party was least bothered when the GJMM activists and some GTA members were being arrested, but it sprung into action when Mr Tamang was nabbed, the posters alleged. These also warned the people against being entrapped in the GJMM net, jeopardising in the process the academic future of the students.
These posters which were pasted at Damber Chowk in Kalimpong as well as at Chowk Baazar in Darjeeling have created a flutter in the Hills.
These were later found torn in Darjeeling.
The people or the organisation that is behind this poster campaign is yet to be identified. ‘Janta’ was found written beneath them.
Referring to the students in the age group of 12 to 18 being cajoled in the statehood heat, the posters warned that their future would
be bleak in case such wanton use of them is not arrested.
Asked for comment, the GJMM leader Mr Jyoti Rai said that the children of Mr Gurung ~ one son and one daughter ~ are no longer students. “They have stepped into their professional careers. Besides, he considers all the children of the Hills as his own. These are the handiwork of some anti-GJMM outfits, out to create problems in the Hills,” he said, adding that his party has not forced the students into the stir.
“The party is as much concerned with the indiscriminate arrests of the people associated with it in different capacities as with the arrest of Mr Tamang. We do not discriminate. All of us are warriors for the cause of Gorkhaland,” he asserted. (SNS)
