The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha delegation led by general secretary Roshan Giri today returned from Delhi after holding talks with a number of leaders, but its main mission of meeting the prime minister could not be fulfilled.
The GJM team had left for the national capital on August 2 hopeful of meeting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, but even after camping for more than a week there, the meetings did not take place.
Giri said, “We met Rajnath Singh, LK Advani, Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitly and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar. As the home minister was ill we could not get an appointment. We will brief all details to our president who will decide on the next course of action.” He claimed NDA and BJP leaders have assured of full support to the statehood demand.
The GJM leaders met Pawar and renewed their demand for the creation of a separate state. "We have also requested Pawarji to impress our cause upon other important political allies during the monsoon session of Parliament and he replied in the affirmative," said GJM spokesperson Harka Bahadur Chhetri, the MLA from Kalimpong.
However, the delegation did not reveal why they could not get appointments with the prime minister and Sonia Gandhi.
Meanwhile, when asked about Mamata Banerjee’s 72-hour ultimatum give to the GJM to withdraw its strike, Giri said, “It is Mamata’s wish, but we will stick to our demand for Gorkhaland.”(EOI)
