Even
as protest rallies and demonstrations are ongoing throughout the
Darjeeling Hills, a delegation of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha is in Delhi
meeting top-level leaders to press with their demand for a separate
Gorkhaland state alongside Telengana.
The GJM delegation led by party general secretary Roshan Giri today met another political stalwart, the Congress party’s CP Joshi.
Giri informed over phone Joshi has assured the delegation of placing the statehood demand before the party brass. He said they also met BJP president Rajnath Singh vice president SS Ahluwalia to impress upon them that Gorkhaland is the only solution to the problems faced by Darjeeling and that the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council and Gorkhaland Territorial Administration have both failed to address even the basic issues pestering the Hills.
The GJM general secretary further said, “We also informed central leaders that no autonomous setup will work out as such experiments have already failed.”
The BJP president has reportedly told the GJM delegates their demand would be discussed at the party’s Parliamentary Board. When asked about their future plan of action while at the national capital, Giri said they have plans to visit Parliament to meet MPs and make them aware about the urgency to form a Gorkhaland state.
Back home in Kurseong, many GJM supporters were seen with their heads shaved to mourn the death of Mangal Singh Rajput, who had set himself on fire in Kalimpong a few days earlier.
Meanwhile, the Muslim community of Kurseong, Anjuman - E - Islamia, has decided to observe the Eid festival in low profile.(EOI)
