STATE govt bent on suppressing people’s movement: GIRI
Bagdogra, 2 August A six-member delegation of the Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM) left for
New Delhi today to press the national leaders across the political
divide on the demand for Gorkhaland. They are likely to meet the the
Prime Minister, several Union ministers and other senior leaders of
different political parties, including the Congress, BJP and UPA
constituents.
The delegation comprised the GJMM general secretary Mr Roshan Giri, three party MLAs from the Hills ~ Mr Harka Bahadur Chhetri, Mr Trilok Kumar Dewan and Mr Rohit Sharma, Darjeeling municipality chairman Mr Amar Singh Rai, and the party central committee member Mr D K Pradhan.
Talking about the objective behind the Delhi trip, Mr Giri said the discussion would be exclusively focussed on the demand for Gorkhaland.
“We will seek the involvement of the Prime Minister Mr Manmohan Singh, the UPA chairperson Mrs Sonia Gandhi, the Union home minister Mr Sushil Kumar Shinde, and senior BJP leaders and leaders of the UPA constituents. We will press for Gorkhaland,” Mr Giri told reporters at Bagdogra airport.
He tore into the state government, saying it is bent on suppressing the people’s movement for the legitimate statehood demand by deploying the central forces in the Hills.
"We want Gorkhaland. We do not want to remain with Bengal, "he added.
Mr Giri said that the GJMM activists were involved in last night’s arson in the Hills. “Whenever such incidents occur, my party is falsely implicated. Our activists had no role in such incidents," he said.
When asked what if the Centre refuses any concrete assurance on their demand he said his party would continue with its movement on the democratic lines. "The Centre will have to accept our demand. We will not give up," he affirmed.
Significantly, the Delhi-bound GJMM leaders were closeted with the Union minister of state for urban development, Mrs Deepa Das Munshi who also left for Delhi in the same flight (Indian Airlines 880) for around half an hour at the airport. What transpired at the meeting is not known. However, the state Congress president, Mr Pradip Bhattacharya, said his party is against division of Bengal to carve out Gorkhaland.(SNS)
