The
Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, the ruling party in the Darjeeling Hills, today
kicked-off its non-cooperation movement against the state government.
All government offices in Mirik were closed and GJM activists picketed
in front of them since early morning. Employees who had reached their
workplace following an order from the state government had to head home.
GJM Mirik divisional committee president Fubi Rai, who was among the picketers, said, “This non-cooperation will continue until the government takes some serious steps in the direction of Gorkhaland.” He warned the state government, “Don’t threaten us with salary cuts. For the sake of Gorkhaland, employees are ready to give up not only their wages but lives too.”
Meanwhile, Mirik Committee Gorkha Primary Teacher’s Organisation secretary BM Subba has urged opposition parties to remain positive about the GJM chief Bimal Gurung’s sincerity towards the statehood cause and urged them to join the movement.
In another development today, effigies of chief minister Mamata Banerjee and TMC national president Mukul Roy were torched in Soureni. GJM activists took out a procession and shouted slogans against them. The duo has of late become targets of GJM activists for making anti-Gorkhaland speeches.
GJM central committee member Sandip Pradhan accused the Mamata Banerjee government of treating the Gorkha community in an unjust manner. He added it is time for the centre to consider the formation of a Gorkhaland state.(EOIC)
