The Sikkim Gorkha Prajatantrik party today convened a press conference to express its views on the ongoing agitation for statehood in the Darjeeling hills.
SGP president KB Rai said, “The Gorkhaland agitation is in need of a political guardian who can act as a bridge between the centre and the hills. Since Sikkim is historically attached with the Darjeeling hills and where the Gorkha population is in the majority, leaders here should come forward and openly declare support to the movement.”
He added several people in Sikkim are in favour of the formation of a separate state of Gorkhaland.
Commenting on the resolution passed earlier by the Sikkim Legislative Assembly on the Gorkhaland issue, Rai said, “Most of the general public is unaware of the resolution passed by the government. The government should depute representatives to put forward the issue in the Lok Sabha.”
He further urged the state government to follow the footsteps of MP Dil Kumari Bhandari who had garnered the support of several MPs from various states in her demand for constitutional recognition to the Nepali language.
The SGP chief also commented on the recent arrests of GJM leaders from Sikkim, saying they were here for some respite after the hectic agitation, but were picked up at night. He said the arrests could have been made during the day, but the administration refrained from doing so.
“If the present government in Sikkim fails to support the demand for Gorkhaland, the residents of Sikkim should think of changing the government,” added Rai.(EOI)
