Gangtok, 1 August: The former chief minister and the
Sikkim Sangram Parishad (SSP) president, Mr Narbahadur Bhandari today
called on the new governor of Sikkim, Mr Srinivsan Dadasahib Patil at
Raj Bhavan today.
An SSP team comprising 12 members met the Governor today.
“Our meeting though a courtesy call, we, however, discussed various current issues confronting the state,” informed Mr Bhandari.
“Our discussion ranged from the brewing tension in the neighbouring Darjeeling Hills over the Gorkhaland demand to the controversy over the writ petition filed by the Old Settlers. The non-functioning Doordarshan in Sikkim also figured during the talks,” said the working president of the party, Mr Rajendra Upreti.
Appreciating the efforts by the district administration of Darjeeling in keeping Sikkim unaffected by the present bout of turmoil, Mr Bhandari said those agitating for Gorkhaland should desist from precipitating crisis for Sikkim.
Sounding optimistic over Gorkhaland becoming a reality after so many years of struggle, he said the present movement will not prove futile in view of the ruling Congress and the UPA having decided to carve out Telangana out of Andhra Pradesh.
“We have also raised the issue of the old settlers and the petition filed by them in the Supreme Court,” added Mr Bhandari.
Commenting on the functioning of the Doordarshan in Sikkim, he said it had been sanctioned during the reign of the SSP.
“The land was provided. Depriving the people of its service after crores of rupees having been spent is not acceptable to us,” he said.
Another leader from the party said: “We are convinced that the chief minister, Pawan Chamling is not giving the nod because of his interest in gaining profit from his own venture, Nayuma, the only local channel of Sikkim."
