Siliguri, 26 August
The second year students of the Siliguri Government Polytechnic called a strike today with demands that the college must return Rs 950 to each student refunded by the State Council. In the first year, the students had deposited Rs 2,500 to the council. The admission fee was Rs 2,000 and the counselling fee was Rs 500, however, the council had refunded Rs 950 to the institution.
"We requested the principal to refund the money for the past six months. But the principal refused us the money. So we were forced to call the strike today,” said Amal Haldar.
Another student, Mr Rajib Kumar Bhowmik said the council had refunded the money to all the polytechnics, but we have been not been given back the money as yet. The Principal, Prof Subrata Sarkar and other teachers entered the institution after breaking the lock of the main gate of the institution.“We have not received the refunded money. So we requested the students to wait for few days,” Prof Sarkar said.
"The principal assured us that we would get the refunded money within 4 September. With his assurance we called off the strike," a student said.(SNS)
