Siliguri, 6 August : With the Darjeeling Hills remaining on the boil on the question of Gorkhaland, there would no memorial programme to commemorate the 72nd death anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore at Mungpoo in the Kalimpong sub-division this year ~ the hamlet that was a favourite haunt of the bard which he visited four times between 1938 to 1940.
The information and cultural department of the state government observed the day in a grand manner last year along with the north Bengal development ministry and the GTA Sabha. Apart from the eminent political and cultural personalities, the locals of the area flanked by cinchona plantations participated with oomph in the memorial programme. “But this year, it is impossible for us to organise the memorial in view of the indefinite Hill shutdown and the tension over Gorkhaland”, said the North Bengal Development Affairs minister, Mr Goutam Deb.
Asked whether the GTA Sabha would take any initiative, senior GJMM leader and in-charge of the cultural department of the Sabha, Mr Binay Tamang said they are not in a position to observe the day at Mungpoo this time.
