Tea tourism project neglected: Gautam Deb

North Bengal development minister, Mr Gautam Deb
Kolkata, 22 November
The state government will take action against a section of tea garden authorities who are giving on rent bungalows and managers’ quarters to tourists without any licence, North Bengal development minister, Mr Gautam Deb, said today at the Writers’ Buildings.
He said the government is incurring heavy financial losses as no tea garden owner has applied for licences for giving bungalows and managers’ quarters on rent to tourists.
In this way they are earning money illegally, Mr Deb said.
Tea garden authorities are taking rents of upto Rs 24, 000 per day for giving bungalows and managers quarters in the Dooars and the hilly areas of the state.
He said the state government gave permission to tea garden authorities for setting up cottages and tourist lodges under the tea tourism project.
But what is going on is illegal and this kind of business will not be allowed, he said.
The tea tourism project allows five acres of land to be developed as a tourist spot where cottages and lodges could be set up.
A large number of tourists including those from foreign countries visit the Terai and the Dooars regularly and the government could earn good revenue from this, if the tea garden authorities or other private firms will care to implement the tea tourism project on these lands.
Private companies were asked to participate in the tea tourism project.
Around 153 tea gardens are located in the the Terai and the Dooars.
It may be recalled that Chief Minister Miss Mamata Banerjee announced tea tourism project for the benefit of the tea garden workers through which they could find alternative jobs and also for attracting  foreign tourists towards West Bengal’s culture and heritage.(SNS)
