Hill Tamangs to push for development board

Tamang Development Board demanded
KURSEONG,18 Dec 2013: In support of the demand of a Tamang Development Board, a large number of people from Tamang Community will be assembled at Mirik during the state CM Mamata Banerjee’s Mirik visit on  January 21.

The Tamang Youth Association, central committee, president, Bishnu Golay said, “We have already staged different programs at different places in the hills in support of the formation of the Tamang Development Board and now we are going to assemble, in a huge numbers in Mirik on 21 January during the CM visit in Mirik. During the visit we will show her, the Tamang community’s distinct culture and tradition and accordingly for its preservation we will emphasize and demand a Tamang Development Board for the development of Tamang Community on different aspects.”

He further informed that they have already met Banerjee in Kolkata as well as also served a deputation to her. They also have voiced their request during her Kalimpong and Kurseong visit earlier. They met the CM and placed their demand to form a Tamang development board, like the Lepcha Community did, for the upliftment of the Tamang community.

Golay further claimed that in all meetings, the CM has given a positive response towards our demand and accordingly following her positive responses.

Regarding the recent statement made by the GJM chief, Bimal Gurung that during his scheduled meeting with the CM on 20 December in Kolkata, he will request her to form different development boards for different communities and castes residing in the hills. Mr. Golay said that if Mr. Gurung is really serious and saying it with a positive frame of mind than we would obviously welcome his initiative but if his statements are just political tactics and mere words, than we will condemn his statement. If he really wants to see all-round development of the Gorkha community, than he has to support the development board demands without any motives and hesitation since all the communities demanding such boards are a part of the hills and would benefit all. Notably, when the Lepcha Development Board was formed, the GJM party and its chief Mr. Gurung protested against it, saying that all such boards should come under the banner of the GTA.

Recently the Tamang community, wearing their traditional attires under the banner of the Tamang Youth Association had organized rallies in Kalimpong and Kurseong, demanding a separate development board for their community.
