Gorkha Sanskritik Utsav
The east Dooars committee of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha is engrossed in making preparations for the upcoming three-day Gorkha Sanskritik Utsav beginning from February 14.
Organising committee president Ashok Lama said the administration has granted permission for the festival and it is being promoted in various places along with necessary decorations.
Committee cashier Rajesh Sharma said invitations will be dispatched from Saturday. Stating members of various communities have already been informed about the Gorkha Utsav, he said Dukpa, Rava, Toto, Adivasi and Meche artistes have also been invited to perform at the festival.
Sharma said Assam’s famous dance ‘Bihu’ will also be performed during the three-day function. He added panchayat representatives from all the 13 GPs under Kalchini block will be invited to the Utsav along with social workers and intellectuals.
GTA chief executive Bimal Gurung and North Bengal Development minister Gautam Deb are also expected to visit the festival. Meanwhile, some observers are of the opinion that the Dooars GJM’s move of holding a Gorkha festival ahead of the polls is aimed at showcasing the party still has a significant presence in the region amid reports of it losing ground.(EOI)
