Kalimpong, 12 February: Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA) chief, Mr Bimal Gurung, laid the
foundation stone for a passenger ropeway from Delo to Relli here.
The function was organised by the GTA’s tourism department at the Delo this afternoon.
Addressing the programme, Mr Gurung said that it is now the responsibility of the local people to bring about success to the ropeway project.
Not only tourists but all the people of Kalimpong will benefit from this ropeway, he said.
He added that he wants Relli to be the number one tourist destination in Kalimpong.
According to him, the GTA plans to build a new Tourist Village at Relli that will have 10 huts, a swimming pool, health club, restaurant, craft bazaar and an open air theatre.
“This tourism project will give a boost to the economy of not only Relli, but also the surrounding areas,” Mr Gurung said.
He directed the officials concerned to begin the ropeway work within 20 days.
He added that a hospital will soon be inaugurated in the Leprosy Area in Kalimpong.
Mr RK Banerjee of the Damodar Darjeeling Himalayan Rides, which will be constructing the ropeway, said the cable car will be 4.3 km long, with two main stations at Relli and Delo and an intermediate station at Alvert Villa. He said it will have a speed of 3 m/s and will complete 4.3 km in 24-25 minutes.
Mr Banerjee sought the GTA’s help in clear hindrances that may crop up during the construction of the ropeway. A public hearing will have to be conducted if the height of the ropeway exceed 1,000 metre and Delo is situated at a height of 1,500 metre.
Mr Gurung further said that the GTA is in a hurry to begin work on various other pending development projects in the Hills as the Lok Sabha elections are fast approaching.
"The Lok Sabha elections will be announced soon and the code of conduct will be put in place and this make it difficult for us to announce new projects,” he said. He also announced construction of a stadium in Kalimpong. Work on this project will kick off soon, according to him. He also said that Rs 1 crore has been earmarked for the Kalimpong municipality to solve its waste dumping problem.
After the Delo programme, Mr Gurung also inaugurated a model school, a 10-bed hospital at
Kagey, and a sub-centre at Lingsey Kha in Kalimpong block 2.(SNS)
