Gangtok, 25 February: The Horticulture College under the Central Agriculture University
(CAU) is likely to be inaugurated in Sikkim in August, the
Sikkim Governor, Sriniwas Patil, said today.
Mr Patil was inaugurating a three-day CAU-North East Agri Fair-2014 at Saramsa (Epica) Garden near Gangtok.
Plans are afoot to introduce under-graduate courses to address problems faced by students in the state when it comes to horticulture and agriculture courses.
According to Mr Patil, farmers in Sikkim will benefit from such a college in the state.
Minister of Agriculture and Horticulture, DN Thakarpa, was the guest of honour in today’s function, while delegates from different northeastern states and the CAU, officials from different departments of Sikkim and hundreds of local farmers and entrepreneurs also attended the inaugural programme.
Mr Patil further said the fair will help build cooperation between researchers and famers in spreading modern agriculture and farming methods. Sikkim has enormous potential for agro-based industries, he said.
“Large cardamom produced in the state accounts for 85 percent of the national production,” the governor added.
Floriculture and agriculture marketing infrastructure is still immature in the hilly regions due to lack of roads and rail heads and middlemen frequently take advantage of this, the governor said.
Minister Thakarpa thanked the CAU for organising the fair. “Farmers of Sikkim, entrepreneurs and students of Northeastern states must take advantage of the fair,” he said.(SNS)
