Gangtok, 18 February : Sikkim received National Tourism Award 2012- 2013 for its record of
successful implementation of Rural Tourism Projects. The state minister
of tourism, Bhim Dhungel was presented the award by the Union minister
for human resource development. Shashi Tharoor at a function held
at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi today.
Union tourism ministry maintained that Sikkim is the perfect destination for experiencing warm hospitality, rich culture and scenic splendour of natural beauty.
Mr Dhungel said that chief minister Pawan Chamling has launched an ambitious Rs 140 crore project for developing various tourism convenience facilities, viewpoints, halting points, conferences, retiring units and other infrastructure project in the state. "In addition to this, the tourism department has been facilitated with another Rs 50 Crore for setting up facilitation centre expected to be functioning by 2015," he said.
Sikkim registers 80,000 tourists visiting rural tourist destinations every year, he said, adding that so far 500 home-stay units have been registered across the state which are providing direct employment to around 1,500 persons.
"We have targeted to double the number of home stay units and attendant employment," he said.
The state tourism department has tied up with its counterparts in Kerala, Maharastra, Gujrat, Goa and Karnataka for ensuring maximum tourist flow from these states to Sikkim, he said and added that state tourism department is negotiating with Nepal tourism and Bhutan tourism to enhance the international tourist flow to his state.(SNS)
