Siliguri/Darjeeling 18 March: Former state urban development minister and senior CPI-M leader Asok Bhattacharya today said he had apprehended that the Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM) chief, Bimal Gurung's, fate could be like that of the Maoist leader Koteshwar Rao, who was popularly known as Kishenji and who was killed by the joint forces in 2011. Mr Gurung yesterday said in Darjeeling that he does not trust the state government and that it may kill him like Kishenji.
Addressing a press meet here, Mr Bhattacharya said Mr Gurung should shun 'opportunist politics'. "Around two years ago, we had expressed our apprehensions that Mr Gurung might be killed like Maoist leader Kishenji, because we are aware of the use and throw policy of the state government. We do not want a recurrence of the incident because the Trinamul Congress has a tendency to use and throw people,” he said.
“Mr Gurung expressed similar concerns. He should understand who are friends and who are enemies. He should give up opportunist politics and do politics of principles," he added. Mr Bhattacharya expressed hope that the Left Front candidate for the Darjeeling Lok Sabha constituency, Saman Pathak, would manage to get a good number of votes.
"Being a former Rajya Sabha MP, Mr Pthak has been a popular face in the region. On the other hand, the Trinamul Congress does not have any significant base in the Hills," he said.
Meanwhile, around 35 Kalimpong-based GJMM activists today joined the CPI-M. Acting Darjeeling district secretary of the CPI-M, Jibesh Sarkar, said they will initially work with the DYFI.
"The party has been playing with the people of the Hills over the sentimental issue of Gorkhaland. We want a permanent solution for the Hills. But neither the GJMM nor the Trinamul Congress are sincere about it,” a former GJMM leader of Kalimpong, Rohit Biswakarma, said.
Meanwhile, in Darjeeling, Mr Gurung today reiterated that he fears for his life and that he is “likely to share the fate of Kishenji in this regime of Mamata Banerjee.”
“The code of conduct for the Lok Sabha elections is in place, but the security I had been accorded earlier has been taken away by the administration, while Gautam Deb (north Bengal development minister) of the TMC is openly campaigning in the hills and he has all the security.”
“As the chief executive of the GTA, I hold the rank of a cabinet minister. If my security is withdrawn, why no Gautam Deb’s?” he said.(SNS)
