Darjeeling, 14 March: Politics in the Hills has heated up yet anothertime. It was the Lok
Sabha elections a few days ago and now it is the court cases registered
against top leaders of the Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM) during the
Gorkhaland agitation.
And this time around, GJMM president Bimal Gurung is likely to knock the High Court doors. The district and sessions court today rejected his bail plea in the case filed by police constable Mahesh Thakuri, the bodyguard of the slain Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha League president Madan Tamang.
On 21 May, 2010, the day Mr Tamang was murdered, a separate case was filed by Thakuri, who said he was also attacked that very day, according to the Darjeeling public prosecutor (PP), Pranay Rai.
"In that case, a charge-sheet was filed on August 2013, in which the names of GJMM leaders like Bimal Gurung, Asha Gurung, Roshan Giri, Harka Bahadur Chhetri and Ramesh Alay have figured,” Mr Rai said.
GJMM defence lawyer Seshmani Gurung said nine names had been added in the charge-sheet when the Gorkhaland agitation was at its peak in the Hills. According to Mr Rai, an FIR was lodged by Mr Thakuri on 21 May, 2010, at the Darjeeling police station and the case was registered under sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging duties) of the Indian Penal Code.
"A total of 36 names figured in the charge sheet filed on August 2013, out of which, eight are out on bail, while 18 have already been arrested," PP Mr Rai
said. "Ten people, including leaders like Bimal Gurung, Asha Gurung, Roshan Giri, Harka Bahadur Chhetri, Ramesh Alay and Pradip Pradhan had then been shown as absconders," he added. "A plea for anticipatory bail was filed by two leaders, Bimal Gurung and Asha Gurung, on 5th March 2014, just before the Lok Sabha model code of conduct came into force," he said. He further said that the hearing for other GJMM leaders like Roshan Giri and Pradip Pradhan has been scheduled for 19 March.
Defence lawyer of the GJMM, Dinesh Chandra Rai, said they will move the High Court now.(SNS)
