Kolkata, 28 March: Trinamul Congress is heavily banking on the support of the Lepcha, Limbu, Sherpa, Bhutia communities and also a sizeable section of the business community to wrest the Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat from GJMM-BJP combined.
The strategy for the Trinamul Congress in the four Assembly segments in the plain is to play up the GJMM-BJP strident campaign for Gorkhaland.
Mr Bhupendra Lepcha, Trinamul Congress youth president of Darjeeling told The Statesman that the Lepha community of the Hills will vote for Trinamul Congress as the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has visited their villages and have looked after their development and promised jobs in police from the Lepcha community. He said Trinamul Congress candidate Baichung Bhutia is expected to get bulk of votes from the Lepcha community.
Mr Lepcha also said that after Miss Banerjee had a meeting with Limbu community just after her party activists' meet at Gorubathan ; the Limbu community has decided to vote for Ms Mamata Banerjee's candidate. He said that after his party chief's conversation with the Limbu community, it is expected that Mr Bhutia may get considerable number of votes from Limbu community. Mr Lepcha also said that there will be a division in the vote bank of Tamang community as Mr Mahendra P Lama has become an independent candidate. But the Tamang Youth wing has decided to support Mr Bhutia. As there will be division of votes, that the Trinamul candidate is expected to get the benefit from this division. He said," a large section of businessmen in the Hills are with Didi as she was able to stop the politics of bandh in the hills which hit their business quite often.' Apart from the business community, Mr Bhutia is also expected to get considerable number of votes from Sherpa and Bhutia communities. Mr Mukul Roy, Trinamul's all India general secretary, today said that the party's campaign in the plain will focus on Miss Banerjee's ability to restore peace in the Hills and her "pro-people' development measures.(SNS)
