Darjeeling, 16 April: As voters in the Darjeeling constituency go to the polls tomorrow, the Election Commission of India (EC) has deployed 41 companies of the central armed forces for security.
Section 144 of the IPC has also been clamped in the region on Election Day, as per which more than five persons are not allowed to gather at a time within 200 meters of the polling station, other than those who are in queue for voting.
While the three international borders shared by the three constituencies in the region that vote tomorrow have been sealed, the sale and distribution of liquor has been banned until 12.00 midnight on 17 April.
Nine companies of the armed forces have been deployed in the three hill sub-divisions of Darjeeling since the statehood agitation around 8 months ago.
"These forces will not be working for the election, but they will continue with their normal job as they have been doing for the last 6-8 months," Darjeeling Superintendent of Police Akhilesh Chaturvedi said. Thirty-two additional companies of the forces have been deployed for the polls.
While 21 companies are under Darjeeling Police, seven are under the Siliguri Metropolitan Police, and four more have been deployed in the Chopra segment in North Dinajpur district.
Mr Chaturvedi said 302 polling stations of the 951 in the Hills have been marked hyper-sensitive.
Darjeeling district magistrate Puneet Yadav, who is also the returning officer, said there are 480 polling stations under the Siliguri Metropolitan Police, out of which, 129 are hyper sensitive. The Chopra segment has 196 polling stations, out of which, 144 have been marked as hyper-sensitive, according to the SP. There are 1829 polling stations in the Darjeeling constituency, out of which, 1633 are under the six segments in Darjeeling district (Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Kurseong, Matigara-Naxalbari, Siliguri and Phansidewa) and 196 are in Chopra.
