The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha has suspended its proposed public meeting slated to be held on April 13 at the Motor Stand in Darjeeling as the date clashes with Mamata Banerjee’s public rally to be held in Chowrasta. Curiosity and apprehension were high among the hill people as the public meetings of the rivals were to be held on the same day. With the GJM backing off, people have heaved a sighof relief as possibilities of violence have been averted.
GJM assistant secretary Binay Tamang informed the party has decided to postpone the proposed meeting. However, he did not say anything on rescheduling the meeting. Tamang said the decision has come up as the party wants to avoid any kind of confrontation to ensure a peaceful environment in Darjeeling.
Claiming the GJM is the largest party in North Bengal, Tamang added it is the responsibility of the party to see that the general public do not have to face ugly situations. (EOIC)
