In
an uncalled for incident late on Wednesday night, a few vandals damaged
the statue of Jungabir Sapkota, one of the most respected Gandhian and
freedom fighter from the hills. The statue located at 11-Mile in
Kalimpong has been damaged at different sections and would need major
repair. The damage caused to the statue has hurt the statue management
committee the most. The members of the Jungabir Sapkota Salig Nirman
Samiti on Thursday visited the spot and inspected the damages. Later,
Samiti president Narendra Lama reached Kalimpong PS and has registered a
formal complaint on the issue.
The Sapkota Statue is located right at the entrance of the town and the small park has already seen a spate of theft since its establishment. Notably a few days after its reveal, thieves made away with the park gate and iron rods installed as fence. Lama lamented the administration has failed to provide adequate security to a number of statues of historic significance across the town. “We recently celebrated our 68th Independence Day, but people are yet to learn civic sense,” he added.
