Minister Gautam Deb today said the state government and the Trinamul Congress would put up a resistance to any attempt to form Gorkhaland, a statement seen as a bid by the party to corner the BJP in the coming elections to the Siliguri Municipal Corporation and Mahakuma Parishad.
The north Bengal development minister was alluding to the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha’s claim yesterday that Union home minister Rajnath Singh had agreed to set up a committee to look into the hill people’s demand for the separate state.
Morcha president Bimal Gurung had also written about the assurance on his Facebook page.
Sources in Trinamul today said the party would use the anti-Gorkhaland plank to eat into the BJP votes. “Going by the results of the Lok Sabha polls, it is evident that the BJP had marched ahead of Trinamul in some SMC and SMP areas. So, Trinamul is considering the BJP as the principal contender. Trinamul will whip up anti-Gorkhaland sentiments to garner votes in the elections,” a source said.
Deb said today: “It seems the BJP and the Morcha are making another attempt to separate Darjeeling from Bengal. We want to make it clear that all possible effort would be put up by our government as well as our party to resist any attempt to divide the state.”
He said: “The BJP is hatching a conspiracy to foment trouble across Bengal. That is why it is inciting the Morcha to raise the demand for Gorkhaland again. We will not tolerate such acts that can lead to breach of law and order. I will go to Calcutta tomorrow and speak with party leaders and senior ministers on the Facebook post (of Gurung) to decide the future course of action.”
Gurung had written in his Facebook post on Monday: “I am happy to inform to all our supporters that Shri Rajnath Singh, Hon’ble Home Minister has agreed to set up a committee to examine our century old demand of Gorkhaland today.”
Trinamul insiders said the party would seize on the supposed central assurance to consolidate its support base in the plains. “We can now tell the people in the plains about the plan by the BJP and the Morcha to move ahead with Gorkhaland,” a party source said.
Four unions of tea garden workers loyal to the Trinamul Congress have been asked by the party leadership to merge and form a single union.
Trinamul Tea Plantation Workers’ Union, Dooars Terai Plantation Workers’ Union, Darjeeling District Tea Employees and Workers’ Union and the INTTUC are the four bodies loyal to Trinamul in the tea gardens of north Bengal.
“On November 22, leaders Mamata Banerjee, Mukul Roy and Partha Chatterjee gave us a specific instruction to join hands and float a single trade union. The new union might get a new name or choose the name of any of the four existing trade unions,” said Alok Chakraborty, the working president of the Trinamul Tea Plantation Workers’ Union.
