Ashok Bhattacharya - first north Bengal leader to CPM state secretariat
Newly elected mayor of Siliguri Ashok Bhattacharya was on Thursday inducted into the West Bengal state secretariat of CPM as a permanent invitee, the first party leader from north Bengal to find a place in the powerful body.

Officially, it was stated that Bhattacharya was nominated to the state secretariat as a “senior leader,” but party sources said that the move was really in recognition of the success of the party under his leadership in the Siliguri civic polls.

It was expected that Bhattacharya would be inducted into the state secretariat as a regular member, but the point was raised in the meeting that in his present occupation as the mayor
Siliguri, which requires full-time devotion, it would be difficult for Bhattacharya to attend meetings of the state secretariat every week in Kolkata. Bhattacharya is also the likely candidate of the party for the Siliguri seat in the coming assembly elections in 2016.

The victory of the Left Front in the civic polls in Siliguri is being viewed as an important success for the party during the rule of the Trinamool Congress. Besides being victory in the most important urban centre in the state after Kolkata, Siliguri is not a traditional stronghold of CPM. Though Bhattacharya has often won the Siliguri assembly seat, votes from some of the hill areas have played an important role in these.

Following the Siliguri Municipal Corporation poll results, now there is a buzz about an “Ashok Bhattacharya model” in CPM. According to party sources, Bhattacharya’s acceptability among different sections of the people in Siliguri, which has a cosmopolitan character, has played an important role in shaping the victory of the LF in the civic polls. He had reached out to people to take stock of their problems and woes, helping him to win support. (EOIC)
