The Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) sent a nine-member team to Kathmandu with relief materials for the victims of the April 25 Nepal earthquake that devastated the Himalayan nation and displaced thousands. The materials are being taken in seven trucks and include food items, medicines and baby food. “What happened in Nepal was horrible. We are not only neighbours but share blood relations. Several countries are extending help to Nepal and the GTA also wants to make a small contribution towards the relief operation,” said GTA executive member and Gorkha Janmukti Morcha assistant secretary Binay Tamang before leaving for Kathmandu.
As many as 200 cartons of mineral water, 30 cartons of baby food (Cerelac), 15 cartons each of Lactogen 1 and 2, 200 cartons of biscuits, 20 cartons of candles, 20 cartons of matchboxes, 100 cartons of soya bean nuggets, 100 packets of noodles, 2,000 pieces of tarpaulin and 1,000 torch lights are being taken to the Nepalese capital. These apart, the GTA relief team has taken a truck of medicines including IV fluids and IV antibiotics, gloves, ORS, cotton, arm slings, antiseptic solutions, ointment, antibiotics and painkillers, dressing gauze and plasters, masks, band-aid, crepe bandages, tetanus injections, sanitary pads and thermometers.
The relief team, however, will not distribute the relief materials directly but entrust yoga guru Baba Ramdev’s unit of the Patanjali Yogapeeth in Kathmandu to do so. “They (Yogapeeth) are already helping the people of Nepal post the earthquake. Therefore, we have decided to entrust them to distribute the relief materials on our behalf,” Tamang said.
The GTA team has also decided to bring back people from the Darjeeling area presently stranded in Nepal. “We will have seven empty trucks at our disposal when we return. People from the GTA area who are still stuck in Nepal and want to come back can utilise our vehicles by contacting me at 009779805331732,” said Tamang.
A GTA few days ago, the GTA also announced it would accommodate the affected citizens of Nepal if they wished to come to Darjeeling and arrange vehicles for them. The hill body has set-up a 24-hour control room with helpline numbers. GTA chief executive Bimal Gurung today said on a social networking site that the council would open a bank account for people to make donations in aid of the victims of the Nepal quake. He also requested the various associations of the hills collecting relief materials, but finding it difficult to dispatch them to Nepal, to contact the GTA.(EOIC)
