The Darjeeling district primary school council chairman has filed a police complaint against an employee in his office alleging that he had taken a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from a candidate for a primary school teacher's job.
Mukul Kanti Ghosh, the council chairman, said he filed the complaint against Ranjan Dutta, a Group C employee, yesterday after getting a written complaint from Sharmistha Ghosh, a resident of Rabindranagar in Siliguri.
The lady alleged that Dutta had taken Rs 1 lakh from her in September last year.
"She has alleged that an employee of my office had taken Rs 1 lakh from her and assured her she would be selected in Teacher's Eligibility Test conducted in 2012. She had appeared for the test. This is a serious allegation and an inquiry should be conducted to find out the truth. So, I lodged a complaint against the employee at Siliguri police station yesterday," Ghosh said.
Sharmistha said she had appeared in TET several times before but seen that many candidates with educational qualifications and TET scores lesser than her had secured jobs as primary schoolteachers because they had bribed employees at the council.
The 2012 result of the exam is not out yet.
"I have done an LLB (law degree) after completing my MA in political science. However, I have not practised law and have opted to teach in private English medium schools. I have appeared in TET several times but was not selected despite getting good scores and having a good qualification" Sharmistha said.
"A racket is being run by the employees of DPSC for several years. It appears that I would be unable to get a job without approaching one of these employees. So I contacted Dutta last year," Sharmistha said, adding that he asked for Rs 4 lakh.
"I agreed to pay Rs 1 lakh in advance and gave him the amount at his residence in Milanpally on September 15, 2014.... However, later he started to avoid my calls and I suspected he is a fraud. I told him he should return the money but he refused," she said.
Dutta denied taking money, saying he was in Chennai for treatment at the time Sharmistha claimed the transaction had taken place.
Admission
North Bengal University has extended the date of online admission in all colleges affiliated to it till June 13 as many students had complained they were not able to fill up the forms. The online admission in 58 colleges under the varsity was supposed to end yesterday.
