CM Mamata to launch Clean and Green Darjeeling project from Chowrastha

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to arrive here on Monday. She is expected to head for the Hills where she will launch a ‘Clean and Green Darjeeling’ project.

The project is an edition of Nirmal Bangla, akin to the Centre’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, and in Darjeeling, it will be launched for the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) areas, however, in the absence of GTA chief Bimal Gurung.

The district magistrate of Darjeeling and principal secretary of the GTA will jointly organise the launch programme at Chowrastha in Darjeeling on Tuesday. According to officials, there will be a colourful programme involving thousands of boys and girls from schools and colleges.

GTA chief Bimal Gurung’s deputy, Ramesh Alley, and other dignitaries including Arup Biswas, the minister for housing and youth affairs, will share the dais with the CM, sources said.

Interestingly, north Bengal development minister Gautam Deb’s name has not been printed in the invitation card for the event.

Chief minister and Trinamul Congress chief, Banerjee, has asked Biswas to take care of the party organisation additionally in the Hills.

The CM will be arriving at Bagdogra at around 2.30 pm and leave for Darjeeling. There is no official programme in the plains on Monday, the sources said.

Banerjee will be coming down to Siliguri and leave for Kolkata on 27 August after attending a meeting on the Tribal Development Council at the Darjeeling Tourist Lodge on 26 August.

According to sources, the CM will announce ‘huge’ financial assistance for the execution of the Clean and Green Darjeeling project.

People in Darjeeling are, meanwhile, preparing to welcome the chief minister and organise a motor cycle rally and form a human chain involving thousands of students on Tuesday.

The state government has also stressed on the need to set up community toilets in Darjeeling Hills, the sources said.

Apart from that, rainwater harvesting and spring sheds with financial support from the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme will be implemented in the Hills.

Banerjee took initiatives to set up several community toilets in the Hills during her last visit to Darjeeling.(sns)
