The hill Trinamool Congress today lodged a complaint with the municipal
returning officer accusing Gorkha Janmukti Morcha president Bimal Gurung
of distributing government schemes in Mirik sub-division in violation
of the Model Code of Conduct in place.
TMC leaders and activists demonstrated in front of the Mirik sub-division office and submitted a memorandum demanding immediate action against the GJM. Anil Chhetri, the TMC Mirik block president, alleged the GJM president had distributed cheques of Rs 70,000 to beneficiaries under the “Hamro Ghar” scheme of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration. “We received information that Gurung was visiting houses of voters and distributing cheques to beneficiaries under the Hamro Ghar scheme in wards 4 (Deushi Dara) and 5 (Krishnanagar). We then lodged a complaint with the Mirik SDO,” he said.
The TMC Mirik block president has lodged three separate complaints against Gurung and other GJM leaders for violating the MCC. “Besides distributing funds to beneficiaries, he (Gurung) and his party cadres are also threatening voters. Some GJM leaders are staying in government institutions and carrying out political activities in violation of municipal election norms and regulations,” Chhetri claimed. The TMC leader also demanded special officers to be attached to
Gurung to keep vigil on his movements during the election. “We demand special officers to be attached to Gurung to restrain him from doing wrongful activities and violating the MCC during the election period,” Chhetri said. Ashwani Kumar Roy, the municipal returning officer of Mirik, confirmed about receiving complaints against the GJM president and said he had directed officials looking after the MCC to start an enquiry. “TMC leaders submitted complaints against the GJM president and his party leaders for violating the MCC. The primary grievance is distribution of government schemes to beneficiaries and using government institutions for political activities. I have directed the MCC officials to look into the allegations,” he said.
Gurung is presently campaigning in the nine wards of Mirik municipality, where political analysts said the GJM will have a tough time winning with the TMC making good ground. “Mirik being converted into a sub-division by chief minister Mamata Banerjee just before the municipal election will hold in good stead for the TMC party. Also, her promise to provide land rights to the people of Mirik will surely sway voters towards her party,” a political observer pointed out not wishing to be named.
GJM assistant secretary Jyoti Kumar Rai rubbished the allegations and said it was the TMC's ploy to gain advantage in the election. “All allegations against our party president are false. No government schemes were distributed in Mirik today,” he said. Meanwhile in Darjeeling, the GJM and the TMC released their election manifestos. The GJM has given priority to achieving a separate state, while the TMC has focused on better and corruption free governance among several other promises. However, both political parties have a common issue of converting Darjeeling municipality into a Corporation. (EOIC)
