Kolkata: One person died after drowning in River Teesta on Wednesday
during river rafting with his wife and his family member. The deceased’s
wife was seriously injured, along with other tourists. The couple had
got married only seven days back.
Delhi-resident Roshan Singh, 38, was on a vacation in Darjeeling with his newly-wed wife and a family member. They were joined by three other adventure-junkies on the raft.
Roshan was riding a raft, which was operated by Everest River Rafting at Kirney, capsized on Wednesday morning mid-river. Both Roshan and his wife were wearing life-jackets. As the raft capsized, Roshan's wife Banshika Singh and other family member tried to rescue him by pulling him out of from water. However, his life jacket snapped and he drowned while his wife received serious head injuries.

Six tourists started rafting at around 10 am from the seventh mile in
Kirney. When they reached sixth mile, their raft capsized.
Kasim Hussain, the rafting guide, has claimed to have rescued all five other people. Kashim finally managed to put Roshan back on another raft. After reaching the finishing point he was rushed to the hospital at Malli, Sikkim for treatment, where he breathed his last on the way.
Banshika, the wife of the deceased, received serious head injuries and has been admitted at a hospital in Siliguri.
Other tourists on the raft were Avinash Patak, Shiwani Dubey, Krishna Joshi and his wife. All of them were from New Delhi and got injured.
Kalimpong Police Station in-charge TN Nath visited the spot. The owner of the rafting agency Puran Rai also visited the spot after the accident.
District Magistrate of Kalimpong said, "We are investigating the matter."
