Sikkim: An earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale struck Sikkim on Sunday at 8:37 pm, news agency ANI reported. As per IANS report, the tremors were felt in the north Bengal districts as well, according to the Met office. The earthquake reportedly did not cause any loss of life or damage to property in the region. The regional Meteorological Department office said, "An earthquake of magnitude 4.7 on Richter scale occurred at 8.37 p.m. in Sikkim, in the depth of 28 km on Sunday.”
Residents of Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar went through moments of panic even though the tremors lasted for mere few seconds. A few years ago, these districts had been hit with a major earthquake, IANS reported. "Some of us who were inside the houses watching football World Cup matches felt slight tremors. People immediately came out on the roads fearing the worst. However, thankfully nothing major have happened," said a resident of Jalpaiguri, told the news agency.
