5 arrested on blast case durung agitation
Darjeeling: The CID arrested five persons on Thursday on charges of orchestrating a blast at a police camp at 6th Mile, 19km from Darjeeling, during last year's statehood agitation.

John Rai, 37, Ashbin Gurung, 48 , Nawraj Thakuri, 36, Arun Kami, 43, and Dewraj Dewan, 41, were produced before the chief judicial magistrate.

"The accused have been sent to 14 days' police custody," said Pankaj Prasad, assistant public prosecutor.

The five have been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

Police sources said they suspected that the blast on September 2 last year was aimed at killing police personnel and create terror in the area.

"During investigation it was found that while the agitation and violence was being led by one group, another group of activists under the direction of Bimal Gurung armed with deadly weapons looted about 325kg of explosives from an NTPC hydel project in Bijanbari," said a police source.

The looted explosives were used to make crude bombs during the agitation which continued for over 100 days, the police sources added.
