Darjeeling takes part in mock disaster drills

Mock Drill organised in Bidhan Market Siliguri
Darjeeling: Along with rest of the State, Darjeeling too took part in mock drills to test the preparedness in case of disasters. The armed forces, present as observers, felt the need for increase in frequency of such mock drills so that the community is prepared for any such eventuality. "Response of the local community along with focus on minimising damage are key factors in the aftermath of a disaster like earthquake, landslide, fire or a building collapse," stated Joyoshi Das Gupta, District Magistrate, Darjeeling.

While a earthquake like situation was simulated at St. Teresa's school; a landslide situation was created on Kutchery Road; Fire in the congested Beech Galli area and a building collapse in Dhirdham area. "The focus was on community mobilisation and carry out rescue operations with whatever local resources like earth cutters are available. The hospital was made ready in 30 minutes including a newly created emergency room," added the DM.

With Darjeeling located in Seismic Zone 4, the biggest public hazard would be the high rises. The permissible height is Ground plus 3 floors. However, majority of the buildings have flouted the building norms. "The Municipality should take up this issue. Building laws have to be implemented stringently. In case of an earthquake these buildings could emerge as public hazards," stated the DM. The district administration has decided to impart training to the local community as to how to tackle such situations. "We will train students, taxi drivers and even roadside vendors" stated Das Gupta.
