Darjeeling: Dr Kriti Ghatani, a native of Darjeeling
in West Bengal, has been awarded the National Young Scientist Award
2018. She was given the award during the National Conference on
Chemistry for Human Health and Environment organised by Green Chemistry
Network Centre (GCNC) and National Environmental Science Academy (NESA)
in New Delhi recently.
An alumna of Loreto Convent, Ghatani hails
from Rose Bank in Darjeeling. She obtained her B Sc and M Sc in
Microbiology from the University of North Bengal and M Phil and Ph D in
Microbiology from Sikkim University. Her research interest is in the
microbiology of fermented foods of Darjeeling district and Sikkim.
Ghatani is currently working as an assistant professor in the
department of microbiology at Raiganj University, Uttar Dinajpur, West
Bengal. She has also taught in Raniganj Girls College under Kazi Nazrul
University, and earlier at the Darjeeling Government College as a
part-time lecturer.
Besides National Young Scientist Award 2018,
Ghatani is also a recipient of the Young Scientist Award 2016, and was
awarded the same at an International Conference at Anand Agriculture
University, Gujarat.
A recipient of Bhagwan Buddha National
Fellowship National Award 2016 in New Delhi, at the 32nd National
Conference, Ghatani has also won the nest poster presentation award in
an International Conference on 'Ethnic Fermented Foods and Beverages:
Microbiology and Health Benefits' held in Gangtok, Sikkim, in 2015. She
was also awarded the best oral presentation award in an international
conference on 'Agriculture, Food Sciences and Environmental Technology
for Sustainable Global Development' (AFSET) in October 2012 at the
Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi.
Talking to EastMojo, Ghatani said, “I am thankful to my
supervisor Dr Buddhiman Tamang and teacher Dr Harekrishna Tiwari (Sikkim
University). I am also grateful to Professor Anil Bhuimali, the
vice-chancellor of Raiganj University and the registrar, Dr Durlav
Sarkar. My parents, Dr Krishnaraj Ghatani and Tilanjali Singh, sister
Smriti, friends and the entire family have been a constant support for
me, who have stood like a rock and supported me through all my good
times and bad.”
