KOLKATA: East Bengal’s second-string side lifted the GTA Chairman's Gold Cup subduing Mohammedan Sporting 3-1 in a penalty shootout at the Mela ground in Kalimpong on Sunday.
The match — officiated by Kanika Burman — remained 0-0 at the end of regulation and extra times. For East Bengal, Hira Mondal, Vikash Saini and S.Karju converted in the shootout.
This is East Bengal reserve team’s second trophy after the IFA Shield.
The game got off to a cagey and cautious start until Mohammedan Sporting raided East Bengal box with an intelligent move in the 34th minute. Prosenjit Chakraborty sent Pankaj Moula clear on the left and the latter attempted to chip it over an advancing goalkeeper. But East Bengal custodian Mirshad K was equal to the task, denying him with a smart save.
Mohammedan Sporting went on to hit the woodwork twice while East Bengal responded with Lalchhanhima and Jhantu Prasad getting close to scoring.
East Bengal defence kept Mohammedan Sporting’s in-form striker Philip Adjah in check as both teams huffed and puffed without finding the breakthrough, forcing the final to be decided in the penalty shootout.
However, nothing went right for Raghu Nandy’s side when Mohammedan Sporting missed the first two shots, thus handing the advantage to East Bengal on a platter. Their first miss encapsulated their woes.
The Mohammedan Sporting player tried to beat East Bengal goalkeeper with a ‘Panenka’ attempt, but the shot lacked power to such an extent that, despite being wrong-footed, Mirshad could get up and claim the ball.
East Bengal custodian saved another shot while Mohammedan Sporting’s second shot from the spot hit the upright.
Adjah later emerged the top scorer with four goals while East Bengal’s Mirshad was named the goalkeeper of the tournament. (TOI)
