DIGBOI: The North-East Gorkha Mahotsav is slated to be held at Golai in Digboi in Tinsukia district from January 8 to January 11, 2019 under the banner of All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union (AAGSU) in association with Bharatiya Gorkha Parisang, Assam Gorkha Sanmelan and Assam Nepali Sahitya Sabha along with 13 other organizations of the Gorkha communities in the State.
Addressing the media, after the laying the ‘main post’ of the mahotsav here recently at Bhakta Bahadur Pradhan Samanya Khetra, Prem Tamang the president the All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union underlined the objectives of the festival as ‘uniting the fragmented Gorkhas across the nation and cementing the bonds to preserve and protect the rich cultures and traditions of the community’.
According to him, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will be conferred upon with the Swatantrata Senani Dalbir Singh Lohar Excellence Award during the celebration on the second day of the event in presence of Union Home Minister Rajnath singh who has also been invited to grace the significant event. “It would be an epoch-making socio-cultural extravaganza marked by the participation of all the gorkha brethren across the nation,” added Tamang.
Meanwhile, Digboi MLA Suren Phukan and Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma addressing the gathering after laying the ‘main post’ of the event together assured to extend all possible support for the success of the event. Various office bearers and members of the Gorkha student body and other organizations of the community belonging to central, district and regional committees were also present during the ceremony. “The festival would showcase the rich Gorkha’s cultures and traditions in various ways including, exhibition stalls, competitions, cultural programme, literary activities etc.,” said Kamal Raj Chetry, the secretary of the reception committee of the Mahotsav.
