Assam CM conferred award at NE Gorkha Festival

Digboi: “Gorkhas are an integral part of the larger demographic profile of Assam. We are all proud of them. Known as strong, courageous, fearless and trustworthy, they can play a great role in Assam’s development as well as the country’s as a whole,” said Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday while speaking at the North East Gorkha Festival being held for the first time at THE Freedom Fighter Bhakta Bahadur Pradhan Memorial Samannoi Kshetra in Digboi. On the occasion, Sonowal was presented the Dalbir Singh Lohar Memorial Samannoi Award by the Gorkha Students’ Union. In his speech, he paid rich tributes to freedom fighter Dalbir Singh Lohar, who fought valiantly for the freedom of the country. He also paid his respect to Ananthalal Sarma and Bishnulal Upadhaya.

The Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said his government will extend full support to the endeavours of the Gorkha Students’ Union for the development of Assam, while also assuring them of a sympathetic consideration of all of their demands. He said the Gorkha community should not be apprehensive of NRC update, adding his government is duty-bound to ensure the safety and security of all people belonging to all communities, including the Gorkhas. He informed the Gorkhas of his government’s cooperation and help in building a museum for them.

Hailing the initiative taken by the Gorkha Students’ Union for starting a pre-examination coaching programme for students belonging to the Gorkha community intending to take APSC competitive examinations, Sonowal said his government will extend full support to it.

On Assam Accord implementation, Sarbananda Sonowal said safeguarding the identity and land of the people of Assam has been the topmost priority, and requested the AASU and other organizations to work cooperatively for implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord.

Assam CM conferred award at NE Gorkha Festival


Assam Chief Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal was conferred with the ‘Swatantrata Senani Dalbir Singh Lohar Excellence Award’ at North East Gorkha Festival 2019 at Digboi in Assam on Wednesday.

The festival is being be held at Golai at Digboi in Tinsukia district from January 8 to 11. The festival is organised by the All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union (AAGSU).

It is supported by Assam Gorkha Sammelan, Assam Nepali Sahitya Sabha and Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangha, Assam.

Sonowal assured the people from the community attending at the festival that his government would take all possible steps to help in the development of Gorkha community residing in Assam.

The Gorkha community is one of the old Nepali-speaking communities residing in Assam since the 16th century.
