Violence on the polling day continues unabated in West Bengal as the state’s eight constituencies vote on Monday. In a booth at Dubrajpur in Birbhum constituency, the central police forces fired a round inside the polling station after locals entered the station with sticks and stones. They also pelted stones and bricks at the forces.

Sources in police however said, it was a ‘blank fire’ and the bullet hit the wall at the polling station. Several incidents of violent clashes were reported from Birbhum, Bolpur and Asansol constituencies.

In Asansol, sitting MP and BJP candidate, Babul Supriyo’s vehicle was attacked near Barabani. Supriyo demanded re-poll in all booths in Raniganj and Barabani assembly segments. A delegation of BJP met the ECI in this regard.

Reacting to the incident of firing inside the booth, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee in a rally said that the ‘law and order’ is a state subject and this is why she always opposed to the deployment of central forces.

EC ordered house arrest for Anubrata Mondal, TMC’s district chief in Birbhum. It was also mentioned that Mondal should not have an access to mobile phones and would be under the supervision of a magistrate. Mondal appealed to court in this regard, court however withheld the order of the ECI. It was in Birbhum, where TMC won in more than 90% seats uncontested.
