A delegation of the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), a BJP
ally, on Saturday met representatives of organisations demanding
Gorkhaland.
The visit comes days after the Centre’s decision on
Jammu and Kashmir. Led by Balaram Debburman, the chairman of the youth
wing of the IPFT, the 15-member delegation held talks with
representatives of Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh.
The IPFT’s principal agenda is creation of Tipraland, a separate state, out of Tripura.
The
IPFT delegation met Nirmal Pun, secretary-general of the Gorkha
Parisangh, and general secretary Akash Lama and discussed various
aspects of the Gorkhaland movement.
“Gorkhaland is a longstanding demand like ours. We feel the
Centre should consider our demands, particularly after its decision on
Jammu and Kashmir,” Debburman said.
The IPFT is part of the
National Federation for New States, which brings together leaders
advocating Gorkhaland, Bodoland, Vidarbha and other new states.
