Bengal says no to complete lockdown for now; restrictions only at containment zones
Kolkata: Amidst growing numbers of COVID-19 cases in the state, West Bengal government has dismissed speculations of complete lockdown once again unless the situation is too critical.

"The state has no plans for the reimposition of complete lockdown but there will be strict lockdown restrictions inside containment zones only. There is no plan for further lockdown unless things become that critical. We are certain we will be able to control the situation before it reaches to that stage," said Rajiva Sinha, State Chief Secretary.

Bengal had recently imposed strict lockdown restrictions at containment zones, later extended till July 19. But now the state government has decided to allow local authorities to decide how long the restrictions will continue, the form of restrictions as well.

This means the dynamic process of identifying an area as containment zone has also been left to the decision of local body including municipalities, corporation, BDO, police and even District Magistrates. While there is no clarity if restrictions will be extended beyond July 19, but the total number of containment zones have gone up in Bengal on Friday, in Kolkata, the number of containment zones have gone up to 32 from 24, reflective of the recent spike.

In the urban cluster of Siliguri town in North Bengal, the complete lockdown has been imposed across 47 wards from July 16, to continue till July 22 and likewise, local bodies will be issuing their own notices. Sources say lockdown restrictions at the existing containment zones are likely to be extended.

This came a day after Centre wrote to West Bengal, Assam, Odisha and Bihar to make renewed efforts to contain the spread of the virus. West Bengal has seen a sharp rise in numbers, recorded 2198 fresh cases and 27 deaths on Saturday.
