With an objective to bring more and more fish farmers to scientific aquaculture and promoting ornamental fish farming, the Indian Council for Agricultural Resources (ICAR)-promoted Bhubaneswar-based Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA) has started an Ornamental Fish Farmer Field School at the fish farm of Bhagirath Roy of Prabhupara village under Sadar block in Jaipaiguri, West Bengal.
Inaugurating the school remotely, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Fisheries, Government of India Sagar Mehera appreciated the efforts in helping farmers of remote North Bengal for adopting scientific aqua farming system.
ICAR-CIFA Director Dr.Saroj Kumar Swain urged the farmers and farm women to take up ornamental fish farming and assured them technical support from the ICAR-CIFA. Swain said the AFFs piloted by the institute in Odisha, West Bengal and Chhattisgarh have been extremely popular. This unique field school meant for farmer-farmer learning and dissemination of ornamental fish culture techniques is a first of its kind initiative in India being established by a group of ICAR-CIFA scientists Dr BN Paul, Dr SS Giri, Dr S Adhikari, Dr RN Mandal, Dr HK De and Dr SK Swain.
The school envisages empowering over 500 ornamental fish farmers in 20 nearby villages of North Bengal contributing greatly to extension and advisory services delivery. The ICAR-CIFA Director felicitated Bhagirath Roy, the operator farmer, being the role model for the ornamental fish farming community in North Bengal.
To mark the inauguration of field school, a daylong training programme on ornamental fish farming was organised for farmers, Government officials and other stakeholders. The training was attended by 120 farmers and farm women.
