Madan Tamang's wife to contest from Darjeeling


Siliguri, Mar 29 : The Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha League(ABGL) has declared the names of three candidates, including slain party chief Madan Tamang's wife, for the three assembly seats in the Hills.




Party president Bharati Tamang, wife of Madan Tamang, will file her nomination for the Darjeeling seat tomorrow, party sources said.


Tamang was killed in Darjeeling on May 21.


S K Pradhan will fight from Kurseong and Tribhuban Rai will contest from Kalimpong, ABGL general secretary Laxman Pradhan said.


All the aspirants will file their nominations tomorrow, he added.


ABGL is the main opposition party in the hills sub-divisions.


Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Secretary Trilok Dewan, Prof Rohit Sharma, Dr H B Chetry and Dr Ram Bhujel yesterday filed their papers for Darjeeling, Kurseong and Kalimpong seats respectively, representing the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha. One of them is a dummy candidate, party sources said.


CPI(M)'s KB Wattar has filed his papers for the Darjeeling seat, officials stated.


The process of filing nomination for the first phase poll on April 18 began on March 24, according to the Darjeeling district election office. Sixteen aspirants have filed their papers for six constituencies till yesterday evening.


The last date for filing nomination is March 31, while the last date for withdrawal of candidature is April 4.


Some of the leaders, who have filed their papers so far, are Urban Development Minister Ashok Bhattacharya(CPM) from his home constituency of Siliguri in Darjeeling district, Jharen Roy from Matigara-Naxalbari and Choton Kisku from Phansidewa.


Besides, CPI-ML(Liberation)'s Kantra Murmo has filed his papers from Phansidewa.
