DTA, GJM labour union agree on wage revision

Darjeeling,  : Gorkha Janmukti Morcha's labour wing lifted the ban on tea export after a bipartite agreement enhancing the daily wage to Rs 90 from Rs 67 with effect from Arpil 1, 2011.

The agreement, which was signed between the Darjeeing Tea Association (DTA) and Darjeeling, Terai, Dooars Plantation Labour Union, affiliated to the GJM, will be effective in 62 tea gardens with about 55,000 workers.

The remaining 15 tea gardens under the management of Indian Tea Association would not come under the purview of the agreement, which was signed last night, said DTDPLU secretary Suraj Subba.

He said all tea gardens under the management of DTA would be allowed to export tea with an immediate effect. But those under the Indian Tea Association management would not be allowed to transport their products out of the Darjeeling hills, he added.

Mr Subba said their demand for implementation of minimum wages under Minimum Labour Wages Act would, however, continue.

He said they wanted the state government to pursue this demand with the planters. Under the minimum wages act a daily wage labourer should get between Rs 120 to Rs 152.

DTA secretary Sandip Mukherjee said the agreement had paved the way for smooth functioning of the tea gardens, which had been suffering for the past one month.
