Sheikh Hasina hoping that the Teesta water sharing treaty would be signed soon

Tinbigha, Cooch Behar (West Bengal), Oct 19 : Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday said here she is hoping that the Teesta water sharing treaty between India and her country would be signed soon.

The signing of the treaty had hit a roadblock after objections by West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee who sulked and skipped a visit to Bangladesh last month with the prime minister raising questions on the provisions of the agreement and the quantity of water India agreed to release to Bangladesh.

Hasina made the remark at Tinbigha corridor in Mekhliganj under north Bengal's Cooch Behar district along India-Bangladesh border that connects the enclaves of both nations with respective populations falling on either sides.

She was visiting there accompanied by former Bangladesh President H M Ershad.

Hasina met Indian Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and minister of state for home Jitendra Singh at Lalmonirhat in Tinbigha.

Hasina was received in the Indian side by the two central ministers at around 1 pm.

Hasina said the two countries will start exchanging enclaves soon in keeping with the agreement signed last month in Dhaka during the visit of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

She planted a sapling on the Indian side and assured that her government would try to facilitate the enclave exchange process.
