KOLKATA: Land acquisition for widening of highways is a big problem, a senior official of the National Highways Authority of India said today.
"Land acquisition is a problem affecting many states. The states will have to deal with the problem," NHAI Chief General Manager G Suresh told reporters here.
Addressing a press conference in connection with the NHAI's bond issue here today, Suresh said that the autonomous body would raise Rs 10,000 crore from the market through tax-free bonds.
He said the money would be used for compensation and construction of roads.
He said that 99 per cent of work for construction of the Golden Quadrilateral had been complete and that only some small stretches were left.
Referring to the widening of NH34 connecting Siliguri to Kolkata, a NHAI official said that work was on in certain stretches.
