Gorkha Territorial Administration to hold election on July 29.With the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) virtually winning the proposed GTA (Gorkha Territorial Administration) election to be held by month end, with 28 of their 45 candidates winning unopposed, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, touring North Bengal, congratulated them and assured the Morch of her full support.

Banerjee posted in facebook: “I convey my best wishes and full support to their sincere efforts of bringing peace, development and prosperity in Darjeeling.

“After so many years, new members got elected in a democratic process as per the agreement of the GTA. They will take oath next month. I congratulate all of them on their participation in democratic process.”

The proposed GTA, the election for which is slated for July 29, is a semi-autonomous administrative body for the Darjeeling hills comprising three hill subdivisions of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Kurseong and some areas of Siliguri subdivision. It will replace the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council (DGHC) formed in 1988. The council managed the Darjeeling hills for the last 23 years.

The Trinamool Congress has fielded candidates in 17 out of 45 seats but the CPM withdrew all the 14 candidates and decided to stay out of GTA elections citing deteriorating law and order condition in the hills.

Reacting to chief minister’s statement, GJM president Bimal Gurung told Deccan Herald over the phone: “The hills have been neglected for a long time and people have genuine grievances about the way in which they were treated so far. We will try to sort out the problems of the hills. There is a lot of work that needs to be done but we will give priority to creating jobs in the hills.”

Thanking the chief minister for her unrelenting support for bringing peace and development in the hills, Gurung said: “Our friendship with theTrinamool Congress will remain even though we will contest in a few seats during GTA polls. We are happy that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has come to visit various places in Darjeeling again.
“We would like to work in tandem with the West Bengal government and I hope to get all sorts of co-operation from the chief minister.”
